The Cleaners is a film about content moderators who work 10 hours a day manually reviewing potentially objectionable content and choosing to ‘ignore’ or ‘delete’ the content in question. These workers are, of course, contractors as part of large consultancies in economically challenged countries. Facebook and Twitter pay them indirectly and aren’t accountable for these workers well being. This poster is both an A0 print as well as an animation, a dense flood of potentially objectionable imagery and endless supply of buttons and cursors. Throughout the film, workers mention how taxing it is to be exposed to this kind of content at such a high frequency, but it’s likely that this task will be automated based on their years of service, and they won’t have jobs at all.
